W. Ross Yates, born in Corvallis, Oregon, received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. from Yale. He taught political philosophy and related subjects at Kenyon College, the University of Vermont, and Lehigh University, where he served on the faculty for 31 years, nine of them in the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Science.
